This box was influenced by Chef Mourad Lahlou, who was born and raised in the ancient Medina of Marrakesh. Also, he is the chef and owner of Michelin-starred Ariza in San Fancisco. MOROCCO BOX - Chef Mourad Lahlou picked items from all over Morocco and included some interesting tips and delicious recipes. Three things you need to know with respect to Moroccan Manners:
Only use your right hand to eat as the left is considered impure and unfit for the table.
Eat with just you thumb and first two fingers - any more and you'll be seen as a glutton.
Always accept an offer to eat meat. Refusing is viewed as impolite and disrespectful.
DARI MOROCCAN COUSCOUS - Couscous refers to more than just the ingredient. It is also a popular stew-like preparation made with vegetables, meat and a blend of spices. Serve with stew. Mix in salad. Cook with sugar for dessert.
TAJINI RAISIN & ONION COUSCOUS SAUCE - Instead of toiling over the long preparation of this dish, this couscous sauce turns the dish into a 10 minute preparation with just a few ingredients. You can use this in a slow cooker. Serve with vegetables.
CHAMITA ANISE COOKIES - Chama Benani, the baker behind these cookies, opened a luxury bakery in Casablanca with an aim of recreating flavors of the food she enjoyed in her childhood. These biscuits are made with just flour, eggs, sugar, and anise seeds. Pairs perfectly with Moroccan mint tea.
ORIENTINES PAPRIKA CRACKERS - From a small company based in Casablanca that specializes in making crackers with all-natural ingredients and local spices and seasonsings. Featuring spicy paprika and subtle oregeno, these crackers are the perfect addition to your snacking arsenal. We had these last night and they went really well with gin martinis.
PIKAROME MOROCCAN HARISSA - Spicy and flavorful, harissa is an ubiquitous condiment throughout all of North Africa that emerged in the 16th century. Today, Moroccan-style harissa is typically made with hot peppers mixed with vinegar and seasoned with spices and herbs. The box suggests to mix into stew, whisk into a marinade or season sauces.
SAFRAN & EPICES PRESTIGE KEFTA SPICE BLEND - Kefta means ground meat, which is commonly mixed with the host of spices and served as meatballs or on skewers. This organic spice blend is made with pepper, cumin, coriander, and parsley. Is delicious with lamb or chicken!
DELICE DAR EL AMRANI ORANGE BLOSSOM WATER - Orange blossom water is made by boiling flower petals from orange trees and collect the steam that emerges from the pot. According to the fact card with this box, they take their Moroccan Mint Tea very seriously and there are five unspoken rules about the tea, from hosting, preparing, never declining a tea offer, proper pouring technique and serving the tea three times. The first glass is AS GENTLE AS LIFE, the second is AS STRONG AS LOVE, and the third is AS BITTER AS DEATH. That sure is some serious tea!!
