SPICED UP subscription box this month comes with a real Fall feeling with the opening recipe of Butternut Squash and Apple Soup. It's funny how when the season changes from Summer to Fall we all crave heartier dishes. Especially for us up North. Cold is definitely in the air and I'm craving everything soup and stew like. SPICED UP always surprises me with incredible spice blends. Every box I learn something new. I consider myself a pretty good cook and I still don't know what half of SPICED UP spice blends are, until I read the product card included with each box. Now that it's Fall, I'm pinning a lot of squash recipes on Pinterest. This month SPICED UP box included Apple Pie Spice. You have no idea how good this spice is?! I made the soup recipe that was included with this month's box and that spice blend transcended the soup out of this World! Besides the Apple Pie Spice I received a few more spices, plus a spice funnel.
With a subscription from SPICED UP, each month you'll receive hand-curated spices, rubs, small-batch condiments and ingredients with facts on origin and how to use them. Also, you will received kitchen tested recipes and a cool kitchen gadget. They also add in some local flair, by including a New England made spice/sauce/rub sample in each box. You can buy one month at a time, or save by purchasing six months or a year at once. They also offer gift purchases.... Christmas is right around the corner. This would make a perfect gift for your cook or aspiring chef in the family.
MONTH TO MONTH SUBSCRIPTIONS start for as low as $20 USD orders, or $35 USD Cdn orders. Payments accepted through Paypal.
SPICED UP - NOVEMBER 2017
APPLE PIE SPICE
Delicious and rich in spicy cinnamon flavor.
Ingredients: Cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, ginger and cardamom
Uses: While the sweet spicy combination of Apple Pie Spice is most often used to season apple pie and other apple-based desserts, such as cobblers, dumplings, fritters and tarts, it's also delicious in just about any recipe that calls for cinnamon and nutmeg.
I used this seasoning in the soup recipe below. The BEST soup I have ever ate and made!
BAHARAT
Baharat has been described as being a version of curry but with a milder and more fragrant aroma.
Ingredients: Smoked sweet paprika, black pepper, cumin, coriander, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon and cardamom
Uses: Use this Pan-Mediterranean seasoning to add some wonderful flavor to your ground meat, couscous, chicken, beef, vegetables, soup, stew, rice, meat loaf and meatballs.
I am using the Baharat seasoning on boneless, skinless chicken breasts tonight using the marinade recipe below. I have a feeling it's going to be the new favorite BBQ chicken spice. The marinade smells Amazing!
FRENCH GREY SEA SALT
One of the most iconic artisanal French salts, Sel Gris Sea Salt is a striking gourmet salt that comes in varying shades of grey. Harvested by hand from clay-lined salt ponds in the famed Guérande region of France, Sel Gris is a crunchy crystalline salt that retains much of its natural moisture. The mineral-rich clay that lines the salt ponds imparts an earthy, savory flavor and a dense texture, making it perfect when used with grilled and braised meats, and roasted root vegetables. Add this distinctive, briny sea salt to foods in any cuisine.
COWBOY SPICE MIX
A Mexican savory taste sensation. With the unexpected flavor of coffee, you get the fruity heat of the ancho and the sweetness of the brown sugar.
Ingredients: Ancho chile powder, brown sugar, paprika, ground coffee, cumin, salt, dry mustard, coriander, black pepper and cayenne pepper
Uses: Good on steak, pork, chicken and fish
I added a pinch of this to my veggie omelet this morning topped with salsa and sour cream. So Good!!
